What’s the best way to find a good maternity photographer?

1. Get started early! You’ll have plenty of time to research and compare different photographers, ask questions, and address concerns at the end of your first trimester. What’s the price? What’s in the package? Does this photographer make you feel relaxed? Will she edit your photos?
2. Search for a specialist! Get a feel for the photographer’s experience and areas of expertise by checking out her website. It’s a good sign if she has maternity session examples in her portfolio or on her website!
3. Style Matters!!! Think about what you want your photos to look like before you hire a photographer. Are you looking for something artistic and moody, or something simple and realistic? How about an interesting environment, or more formal portraits with a simple backdrop? Ask her if she uses film or digital (or both). Film has a soft, organic look that can be nostalgic, whereas digital has a sharper quality, more vibrant colors, and a crisper overall look.
4. Ask for referrals! Ask the photographer for several referrals if you weren’t personally referred by someone who already used the photographer and has a good review.
5. Do they also take newborn photos? Does this photographer do newborn portraits too? After screening a photographer and establishing trust, it makes sense to find someone you can use again.
6. Don’t rule DIY out! You’ll still want to visually document your pregnancy, even if you can’t afford maternity photos or don’t have time. Once baby’s here, you’ll regret not having a few photos to look back on. Stage a makeshift photo shoot with your partner or a friend who’s good with the camera. Shoot during the golden hour (the hour right before or right after the sun goes down or rises), when the light is ideal for capturing warm, glowing portraits.
